Route of the Great Alps

A road trip itinerary

The Route des Grandes Alpes is certainly one of the most beautiful itineraries in France, offering road trip fans a grandiose panorama of nature. Bikers and motorists will enjoy criss-crossing this exceptional tourist route. On the program: an unforgettable trip to the heart of the French Alps, from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea, over 720 kilometers of asphalt, and through the 18 largest Alpine passes, including the Col de la Madeleine, near the gîte d' Eau Rousse stage.

By motorized vehicle, plan a short week to take full advantage of this route. For the bravest, some passes are worth climbing by bike, in the footsteps of the Tour de France cyclists.

Nature, culture, gastronomy… this route is a call to curiosity and contemplation in a setting unique in the world. You will cross 5 departments – Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes – and will be able to appreciate the diversity of the mountains, often preserved within a national or regional park.

Fully open from June to October, the Route des Grandes Alpes welcomes you as soon as the snow melts, which block the highest passes during the winter.
